Why recall MattSixtyNin?
These are my reasons at least. Some people may have their own, different ones.
Yes, this is a wall of text. I’ve tried to make it as brief as I can and, importantly, easy to skim.
The bullet points are the important part, the rest is just context.
SPT is a role which is appointed by the Speaker (who in turn is elected by Representatives). They are essentially the deputy speaker and can step up when the Speaker is busy.
This is historically not of much significance or power – by design – however recent SPTs have defied convention. For example, by securing the role Discord admin rights.
This hasn’t been very controversial before, but MattSixtyNin has sought to further bend established norms. A very non-exhaustive list:
-
had temper tantrums at being called “Matty”: removing access to chats, heavily purging channels, and throwing around
?mute
. He’s had temper tantrums at other stuff too, but this one is just absurd because of how small it is. -
removed peoples access to logs in the legislature server, because they kept posting logs of him (and his cronies) doing stuff, including deleting criticism (screenshotted)
-
authorised two vexatious “provisional inquires”. The speaker and SPT have the power to allow inquiries to start before Representatives can have their say. This is meant for emergencies, but has been used twice in the past 24 hours in a quite pathetic political fight with the Governor.
Most citizens don’t support these inquiries anyway.
-
tried to grab power unconstitutionally by creating an oversight committee under his control. He was warned about this being illegal by literally everyone, but steamed ahead anyway; the Supreme Court had to step in and tell him off.
Like seriously, basically every single attorney publicly warned this was blatantly illegal and he still did it. And that’s before you factor in the point that it’s an obviously corrupt power-grab.
I will make clear that this is absolutely nothing personal about MattSixtyNin. I’ve spoken to him a handful of times and he does seem genuinely nice, and I have nothing against him. However, his behaviour as a Representative is unethical and absurd; that can’t be without consequences.
We should hold Representatives to high standards, especially presiding officers.
MattSixtyNin does not rise to those standards; his continued conduct lowers them.
I for one do not think we should “Keep MattSixtyNin in the House of Representatives”.
