A Letter Directed to Congress | Poll & Debate

Dear Congress,

Speaking as a former criminal and former employee of the state, I believe that the maximum jail time for offenders against the state should be lowered.

Why?

I believe that a 72 hour jail time maximum is hurting our state and it’s playerbase. The current maximum jailtime can put offenders away for days on end. This is causing the roleplaying criminals to burn out, and leave the state. The current system favors the law abiding side more than the criminal side, but both are required in a balance for this state to be good.

Currently, I believe most of Congress favors keeping the maximum on the higher side to put away FRPers and cop baiters away for longer. However, this strikes the actual roleplayers as well since they spend time, energy and money doing something to give the LEOs and SCFD something to do, but get several hours in prison. Some of these good criminals are even friendly with law enforcement members, yet the state puts them away for hours.

As @Elite_Creations said in his post,

One of the ways is to have the criminals try different scenes. This would definitely take some understanding on the criminal’s end, but, they could do a MVA one day, and other violent crimes other days. Essentially, it would just be a big variation of crimes, which would probably make the county more enjoyable.

I believe this could also carry on to letting criminals join businesses and give the state a better variation of crimes and different things. For more reading on this, check out @Cuxle’s post on letting criminals partake in workplaces.

Continuing on, I believe a good idea would be to trial run a 24hr max time for a few months, and legislature should consider putting in a bill to lower it. If all goes well and passes, legislature could even enact a temporary bill with can mass-lower times until the trial period is over, and enact a more permanent solution should we lower times further or keep it at 24hrs. (big thanks to @DannyboyJurist for pitching the trial run idea fyi)

Polls:

  • I’d support lowering the max jail time.

Thank you for your concerns Puggish, as I said I’ll be writing a piece of legislation to amend the appropriate legislation to 48 hours of max sentencing time. I would personally like the time even lower but it’ll be impossible to achieve that. I’m ashamed this has gone on for too long, and with the majority of the public supporting a decrease in max sentencing on past forms Congress need to listen to them. I, will be listening to you.

It’s been going on for too long and has heen affecting the community by making the most important players if the game (criminals) leave the game due to these absurd times.
thank you

Thank you for creating a poll like I politely requested, as it will most certainly gain Congress’s approval upon the petition receiving anticipated fantastic results. Alike yourself, I am in support of lowering the maximum sentence time. I hope the other Congresspeople will see the better result in this case, and find it imperative to get this changed.

While opinions are split on this issue, I will make my decision off the peoples say, as it is my job. Seeing the results of this poll, does determine I will support a legislation that lowers the max sentence time. Thank you all for reaching out to your elected officials, as it helps us do our job.

I’m curious, how many votes does congress generally require before they make a decision off a poll?

If we are to assume this is a petition, then at 30 responses in favor of lowering the maximum jail time Congress is obliged to respond, and should consider creating new legislation at 100 responses. However, I believe an amendment to lower the time is currently being worked on.

Let me point this out, each and every time 48 hours has been proposed it has failed. Prime example: https://trello.com/c/kyVxt6Mm/5079-an-amendment-to-reduce-the-max-sentencing-time failed house 0-6-0, next example https://trello.com/c/j3aUnevS/4961-an-amendment-to-reduce-the-max-sentencing-time failed senate 0-3-1. I’m saying this because members of congress say they’ll do something and next thing you know its something different. Let’s actually this time pass the amendment and not just say we are going to do it to make everything look all good and when we get on the floor we get another 0-6-0, and this is not meant to be shady or anything over the sort but do not say one thing and do another.

people want lower jail time > congress denies it

My question is why? Why is it hard for congress to listen to what the public has to say? And just do it.

David it’s not that congress does not listen its the actions. Like I’ve stated there has been multiple times that we have proposed the bill and it has failed. So once again its not that we don’t listen its the actions.

but the people that failed the bill should be representing the public, which majority of them wants the jail time lowered

Why does it fail?

Are you sure about that? No one but a few people have come to me in regards to this topic. With the knowledge I have on this topic, I can tell you that the majority of the public does not support this topic. 35 people don’t represent a consensus of Firestone, specifically the twenty-five people that voted in support of this poll do not represent the entirety of Firestone. With that being said, this would need more support in order to win over Congress’s opinion. I am personally in favor of it, but my colleagues are not.

People argue that if we were to lower it, criminals would not get out of trouble sooner and wouldn’t serve the punishment they need. That argument is erroneous, and I support us lowering the maximum time judges can sentence.

David, it fails because congress says one thing and does another and it’s a simple as that.

Alright,

Was there any attempt to change their minds? Or show them a different view on the topic?

I proposed an amendment to lower it to twenty-four hours, I also argued for it in Congress. It was passed by both chambers, and is now in effect.
