At some point in your LEO career, you are going to make a mistake. Don’t make it worse, and ill give u some VERY simple tips on how to avoid that
-
If you think you are doing something illegal, there’s a good chance you are. Reconsider what you are doing before you make a mistake you cant take back. If you think someone around you is doing something illegal, privately message them and ask them to maybe reconsider what they are doing.
-
If you DO something you think might have been illegal, SHUT UP! I know this sounds counterintuitive but don’t admit fault, DM the victim, etc because anything you say, can and WILL be used against you, potentially in a court of law or in an investigation. Don’t say anything and move on with your day. If you need legal advice, don’t spill your whole case in a publicly accessible chat, DM a lawyer or simply ask for one.
-
If you can hide your name legally, do so. Don’t make it easy for someone to identify who you are, but remember to always answer name and badge requests in a timely manner.
-
Be respectful to people around you and criminals you interact with. Someone is a lot less likely to try and fuck up your career if you treat them with respect.
-
Please for the love of god read the criminal code fully and be knowledgeable on the bill of rights and other important laws that pertain to your job such as authority to arrest act. For example, “Identification Presentation” is not a crime. If you didn’t know that, and don’t know what the actual crime for failing to provide ID is, re-read the criminal code. Make sure you know what a detainment is, please.
-
Shooting someone who is “LFA” simply because someone said they are LFA is not a defense to murder. Follow the FLDA please and use force responsibly. If you are in a department that enforces lethal force authorized areas, know what those areas are for sure before you engage.
I do not condone illegal actions in any shape or form. If you do something illegal, be smart about it at least.
