SCOPE OF PRACTICE - JANUARY 14TH, 2019 | 01/14/2019
The ‘Scope of Practice’ shall be defined as the procedures, actions, and processes healthcare providers are permitted to undertake with the terms of their medical license. Healthcare providers may not practice beyond what is covered under their medical license. Healthcare providers are not permitted to practice with tools, or instruments that are not normally available in the field. When off-duty, healthcare providers may only provide minimal levels of care without expanding into the regions of advanced medical practice. Healthcare providers are allowed to assist on-duty Emergency Medical Services in the field, but may not practice above their certification, and must have full consent from the on-duty healthcare provider that they are assisting. Healthcare providers may not carry medical equipment off-duty, with the exception of very basic equipment available to the general public. 24-7 on-call healthcare providers may carry medical equipment off-duty in their vehicle, but must be approved & inspected by the Firestone Department of Health’s Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
Examples of Scope of Practice
- An off-duty Registered Nurse providing basic care to an individual involved in a motor vehicle collision - Inside their scope of practice
- An on-duty Paramedic performing surgical procedures on a patient not taught under their license - Outside their scope of practice, in violation
- An off-duty Emergency Medical Technician using a jumpbag to treat a patient involved in a stabbing - Outside their scope of practice in the sense of carrying advanced medical equipment off duty, in violation
Violations of rules defined ‘scope of practice’ will result in a loss of licensing, and a potential blacklist of carrying other medical licenses in the State of Firestone. For any questions, comments, or concerns, contact the Firestone Department of Health Senior Administration.
