In most cases, I don’t think it boils down to either of these options.

I’m going to assume that you’re referring to people setting their Discord profile picture to the portrait. In this case, it often boils down to a sense of uniformity or community. One may wish to display their association within a certain department or to just fit in with the already pre-established norm. Does this mean that they’re doing it to flex their power? Probably not. This is also pretty evident when you realize that those with Discord Nitro can edit their profile picture in a specific server, which is a seemingly common practice amongst those who have any sort of portrait profile.

I also think it’s unfair to assume that the people who partake in the portrait trend are doing so for the purpose of self-aggrandizement or to center the attention onto themselves. If anything, I’d argue it’s the opposite, as portrait profiles have become somewhat common place, meaning they’re more likely to blend in.

Now, is it possible that some people use their portrait in their profile because they love looking at their online character or due to some inherent desire to flex their position of power? Sure. Is it fair to assign those assumptions to everyone with a portrait profile picture? No.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to like portrait profiles. My personal opinion is that, except for in department servers or the forums, they’re odd and out of place. Does this mean that anyone who disagrees and chooses to make their platform-wide profile picture a portrait is a narcissist or bragging about their position or power? Absolutely not.

Please correct me if I misinterpreted your topic since you didn’t provide much initial clarification.
